Fresh, Hamnpork, and Darktan’s near-death experience force the Rats to reconsider practical risk, leadership, and what survival can mean.

Fresh’s Fatal Mistake

The First Loss A trap in the tunnel Fresh enters a dangerous trap before the route has been cleared and is crushed. A lesson without comfort Darktan warns the squad not to repeat the mistake, but the death also exposes how little anyone understands about what follows life.

Hamnpork’s Capture

The Leader in Danger A crisis of fury Hamnpork lashes out at the human danger surrounding the caged Rats and is taken by the Rat-catchers. A change of purpose His capture gives Darktan and Sardines a reason to risk the rat pit rather than retreat to safety.

A Rat Faces the Dog

Hamnpork’s Last Fight Returning to action Wounded and surrounded, Hamnpork orders the other Rats to work together rather than stampede. Survival through rescue Sardines’s elastic-line plan removes him from the pit, but the ordeal leaves him exhausted and close to death.

The Last Advice

A Leader Dies A final conversation Hamnpork returns weak and asks whether he remains the leader before speaking privately to Darktan. A quiet burial He dies in the darkness, and Darktan orders the Clan to bury and mark him rather than treating his body as food.

Darktan’s Narrow Return

A Near-Death Reversed A broken trap Darktan is caught in an old Breakback and expects to die while Nourishing studies the mechanism. A rescue changes his thinking Nourishing frees him, and Darktan returns with a larger sense of what the Clan needs from its leaders and thinkers.
